artist statement

Mijn werk gaat over het ontbreken van vanzelfsprekendheden in het leven. Het gaat ook -toch- over de mogelijkheid nabijheid te ervaren tot dat wat anders is; de hond die je aankijkt, de steen die je vreemd is maar niet voor de rivier waar je hem opraapte.

Ik gebruik fotografie en poëzie om steeds nieuwe ingangen te zoeken naar mensen, bomen en dieren om mij heen. Dit schrijven, fotograferen en soms het maken van collages is een poging om vaste grond te krijgen. Dit lijkt in de vorm op fragmenten van een verhaal maar er is geen midden en de personages verschuiven. Er is evenmin alleen maar steeds ontglippende werkelijkheid, het ontbrekende midden is een open plek waaraan ik mij toch kan oriënteren zoals bomen staan rond een open plek in het bos. Zoals herten kunnen schuilen voor de wind in een duinpan.

De niet-lineaire vorm die ik gebruik vindt zijn weerslag in het maken van boeken. PLACE is mijn eerste boek dat foto’s combineert met poëzie en collages. De kijker kan bladeren en komt niet in een verhaal maar kan mee bewegen met een weergave van gemoedstoestanden of mijn impressies van de wereld. Op dit moment werk ik aan het project Transmasc haperingen. Dit project bestaat uit een bundel, Restricties, en een bijbehorende EP, Transmasc Haperingen. De gedichten blijven het uitgangspunt, maar krijgen een tweede leven in geluid. De muziek – met invloeden uit triphop en soundscape – probeert niet de tekst te illustreren, maar een atmosfeer te creëren waarin de taal kan ademen.

My work is about the absence of self-evident certainties in life. It is also—after all—about the possibility of experiencing closeness to what is different: the dog that looks at you, the stone that is strange to you but not to the river where you picked it up.

I use photography and poetry to keep searching for new points of entry to the people, trees, and animals around me. This writing, photographing, and sometimes making collages is an attempt to find firm ground. In form, it may resemble fragments of a story, but there is no center and the characters shift. Nor is there only an ever-elusive reality. The missing center is an open place to which I can still orient myself, the way trees stand around a clearing in the forest. The way deer can shelter from the wind in a hollow between the dunes.

The non-linear form I use is also reflected in the making of books. PLACE is my first book combining photographs with poetry and collages. The viewer can turn the pages and does not enter a story, but can move along with a rendering of moods or my impressions of the world.

At the moment I am working on the project Transmasc Haperingen. This project consists of a collection, Restricties, and an accompanying EP, Transmasc Haperingen. The poems remain the starting point, but they receive a second life in sound. The music—with influences from trip-hop and soundscape—does not try to illustrate the text, but rather to create an atmosphere in which language can breathe.
